THE ALMANAC 2009

ArtAsiaPacific’s encyclopedic record of the year just past and the year ahead, The Almanac 2009, is the essential guide to major trends and developments, and to the projects and the people who define the contemporary art world spanning Afghanistan and South Korea to New Zealand, Uzbekistan and Yemen.

With a mix of facts, figures, maps and predictions, ArtAsiaPacific’s Almanac 2009 is overflowing with over 280 pages of detailed perspectives on the major galleries, museums, auction houses, arts fairs and artists’ studios in the Asia-Pacific region. Divided thematically and geographically, the first half of The Almanac is a summary of key art world events--record-breaking auctions, blockbuster shows, biennials new and old; the second half covers the past year's artistic activities in the 67 countries--from the Middle East through East Asia and the South Pacific--that ArtAsiaPacific covers like no other publication.

The Almanac also includes special contributions by visionary artists Dinh Q Le and Xu Bing, market mavens Minal Vazirani, Rivka Saker and Yoshiko Issiki, iconoclastic British collector Frank Cohen and forward thinking curators Tobias Berger, Vasif Kortun, Letila Mitchell and Farah Wardani.

In the “Global” section, ArtAsiaPacific takes a broad view of the rest of the world, recapping seminal international events. In News, we discuss the year’s major scandals, censorship debates, artistic prizes and new institutional ventures. There is also extensive coverage in the sections on Art Festivals, Art Fairs and Auctions, the major exhibitions of Asian art in Europe and the Americas, and the year’s important art books. In addition, ArtAsiaPacific also singles out path-breaking artists in Five for 2008: Mike Parr, NS Harsha, Kimsooja, Huang Yong Ping and Shigeyuki Kihara; and nominates One for 2009: Hamra Abbas. There is also a round up of the best 10 gallery shows, museum exhibitions and art publications of 2008, with a preview of notable museum exhibitions in 2009.

Compiled by the magazine’s editorial staff and international correspondents, the contents of The Almanac ranges from amount spent on the arts by India, to the names of the major museums in Australia and Vietnam, the activities of the leading alternative spaces in Kazakhstan and the key art programs in North Korea. Beyond the facts and figures, however, The Almanac is a compendium of the year’s most prominent ideas and trends, and a guide to future developments in Asia.
